Search Pigeon wykorzystuje funkcjonalność Google Custom Search Engine. Pozwala to na definiowanie określonych obszarów wyszukiwań.
Wyszukiwarki serwisu umożliwiają dostęp do informacji o setkach czasopism naukowych publikowanych w internecie w trybie Open Access. Czasopisma można wyszukiwać w kategorach (historia, filozofia, nauki społeczne, sztuka, literatura itp.), na stronie podglądać można również abstrakty artykułów.
Jak pisze autor projektu Mike van Eerden, the guiding philosophy behind Search Pigeon is that the production of trust and knowledge is fundamental to the transformation of society, from the well-being of individual minds and bodies to the healthy operation of large and complicated human networks and institutions.
