Bikes and historical education – “Uprising critical mass”

Commemoration of 62 anniversary of Warsaw Uprising is a main idea of Uprising critical mass, which is being organised tommorow (3rd of August) in Warsaw, Poland.

Critical Mass is an event, which takes place in cities around the world where bicyclists take to the streets en masse.

As it is shown now in Poland, the critical mass could be not only a manifestation for ecological or political issues, but also it can be used in historical education.

According to the plan, bicyclists are going to ride throught streets and places, which is important for the Warsaw Uprising history, where battalions “Parasol” and “Zośka” had been fighting. Durign the stopovers they may have a chance to listen to historical testimonies of women, who had take part in the Uprising of 1944. Recordings are taken from Archiwum Historii Mówione (The Archive of Oral History) of Warsaw History Meeting House.

After the riding, the performance of Aga Zaryan is planned. Her new album “Beauty is dying” is a tribute for the Warsaw Uprising. As like as the album of punk band Lao Che “Powstanie Warszawskie” she describes the reflections about the history and meaning of Uprising.
A polish rap band WWO also have published a new version of old song from that times.

The Warsaw Rising Museum is being responsible for most of this actions. It promotes the new ways of historical education, which are using a new media, street actions, music performances and more. Also the huge program of collecting relations of Uprising soildiers takes place there.

The Warsaw Uprising (Powstanie Warszawskie) was a World War II struggle by the Polish Home Army (Armia Krajowa) to liberate Warsaw from German occupation. The Uprising began on August 1, 1944, as part of a nationwide rebellion, Operation Tempest. It was intended to last for only a few days until the Soviet Army would reach the city. The Soviet advance stopped short, however, while Polish resistance against the German forces continued for 63 days (until October 2).
